The certification authority of the German Technical Inspection Authority for Information Technology (TÜViT) has successfully certificated the first step of the invoicing process for private customers in Deutsche Telekom's land-line network, following an inspection carried out by 2B Advice. This certification was organized by the telecom company's data protection department. The invoicing process for the land-line network involves processing and pricing all of the traffic data generated by over 27 million customers making telephone calls and using the internet and emails on a daily basis. "With this certification, TÜViT has confirmed that all customer data protection requirements in this area are being met," reports Antonius Sommer, TÜViT Certification Managing Director.
The 2B Advice GmbH inspection authority is recognized by TÜViT as a legal inspection authority for Trusted Site Privacy certifications. It is responsible for assessing whether procedures comply with the Data Protection Acts.
As an initial step, the certificate has been granted to the procedure for "Traffic data processing - Individualization of traffic data according to contract - Data preparation for monthly invoicing", and it will remain valid for the next two years. Further sections of the invoicing process are due to be audited and certificated by the end of the year.
The level of quality that data protection procedures have reached is defined on the basis of certain requirements that need to be fulfilled. A whole series of quality criteria is involved in this inspection, as listed below:
- Legal requirements
- Validity of the processing
- Customer service
- Treatment of employees
- Usability
- Transparency
- Quality management of data protection
- Data security
And this is just for the first step of the invoicing process. "We had already decided in 2008 to have a recognized external organization such as TÜViT carry out additional auditing and certification for the processing methods for these particularly sensitive data, which concern all T-Home customers and which are therefore deserving of our special attention," explains Claus-Dieter Ulmer, Corporate Data Protection Manager. "This means that we can offer our customers continuous data protection that has been approved and guaranteed by an independent third party."
