EU: Half of consumers distrust companies' handling of their data

The forthcoming data protection regulation presents both challenges and opportunities. Many companies would do well to make systematic use of these opportunities, but right now they seem more likely to squander their credibility. For example, 48 percent of all consumers lack confidence in the way companies handle their personal information, and even 20 percent believe that their data is unsafe in the hands of any company. Then again, management takes on too little responsibility for data protection. In Germany, only eight percent of the senior managers personally concern themselves with the protection of personal data. This is obviously a case where a threat clashes with a serious vulnerability, especially since management is ultimately responsible for complying with data protection compliance rules.

DE: Has Facebook illegally harassed your friends too?

This is certainly a possibility now that the German Federal Court of Justice (BGH) has ruled that Facebook's "Find Friends" function violates competition law, because Facebook used contact information uploaded from users' address books to even send e-mails to people who did not have Facebook accounts. The BGH ruled that these e-mails were a case of unacceptable harassment and are therefore illegal.

DE: “People’s Encryption” project soon to launch

Only 15 percent of all German internet users encrypt their e-mails. In the post-Snowden age, that’s not enough, says the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology. That’s why they’ve begun a project called “Volksverschlüsselung” (EN: “The People’s Encryption”). Despite the multitude of secure encryption methods available on the market, all of them have one fatal flaw: Their use is too complicated for everyday use by average internet users. The Fraunhofer Institute wants to fix this problem. According to them, Volksverschlüsselung will “simplify the distribution of encryption keys such that even average internet users will have no problem mastering it.”

EU: Safe Harbor is now the EU-US Privacy Shield

Today the European Commission and the United States presented an agreement called EU-US Privacy Shield that follows the Safe Harbor Agreement after the European Court of Justice declared on October 6, 2015 that the Commission’s decision on the Safe Harbor agreement was invalid. This is a big relief for European companies and US data processors, but there is still work to be done.

DE: Tips for affordable data protection training

Data protection training courses are a legal requirement. They form part of the core tasks of data protection officers, and are the most effective protection against data protection infringements. Nevertheless, 22 percent of companies only train their employees once upon hiring. 42 percent of employees of German companies are trained less than once a year, and only four percent are actually trained annually. How can this be? Are false economies being made here? What possible solutions are available for this dilemma?

JPN: Environmental protection and data protection go hand in hand

The Japanese hardware manufacturer Epson has presented a new technology that is intended to effectively and economically combine data protection and environmental protection. What is known as Dryfiber technology is said to enable the production of visually appealing paper made from waste paper with no added water. According to Epson, the machine built for this purpose, Paperlab, can be set up in the company itself and means there is no need for the required office paper to be disposed of, produced, or purchased externally. Paperlab is set to go on sale in the coming year. No announcements have yet been made regarding the price.
